WILDLIFE IN TENNESSEE

Have you ever gone outside at night and heard a hooting sound? That could be the sound of an owl calling. There are a few species of owls indigenous, or native, to Tennessee. They are the Eastern Screech owl, the Barn owl, the Barred owl, and the Great Horned owl. As you probably know, owls are nocturnal, or are active only at night. That means that you seldom see one during the day.

Many people actually go on an owl-prowl at night to call for, listen to, and possibly see an owl. They go back into the woods, sometimes with a park ranger and make an owl call. Different species have different sounding calls.

Great Horned OwlHere are some examples: Great Horned Owls give a series of 4-5 deep, resonant hoots (this is why it is sometimes called a hoot owl.) It sounds like hoo hoohoo hoo.

Barred OwlBarred Owl gives a series of 6-9 hoots, each slightly higher pitched than the previous one, ending with a low slurred hoot. Listen for hoo hoo hoohoo hoo hoo hoohoo-awwww. It sounds like the phrase "Who cooks for you, who cooks for you-all?"

Screech OwlScreech Owl, even though it is the smallest owl around here, has the spookiest call. Its call is a low tremble that rises up then falls. Sometimes it’s just in one low pitch trembling hoooooo that doesn't rise.

You can hear these owls call during the evenings in wooded areas and parks when you go out at night. You could be an owl-prowl detective and go out to the woods with a park ranger and investigate the area for things like owl pellets, listening for the sound of an owl hooting, and identify the species. You could also become an owl-prowl detective by finding the answers to these questions:

How do you tell a male owl from a female owl?

What do owls eat?

What would you usually find in an owl-pellet?

When are owls active?

What colors is the Eastern Screech owl’s feather color?

Amphibians are Awesome Animals

They live a life both on land and in water. Most start life in a jelly-like egg in or near water. Frogs hatch as tadpoles. Even though they look different in the beginning, they will go through metamorphosis to look like an adult as they grow. Some salamanders look like tadpoles when they hatch and some look like a very tiny salamander. Although salamanders look like lizards, they are amphibians. Like all amphibians, they have soft, moist skin which helps them to breathe. Can you imagine breathing through your skin? There are many kinds of amphibians and they live in many different places! They also make many different noises! Frogs call to each other to attract a mate. During Spring, you can hear them singing away. Have you ever heard a frog call? Go to a pond or a wet field and listen as the sunsets. You might just hear frogs singing theirsongs!
